Pre-Shave Oil Guide: Tips, Ticks, & Why It Is Important

Do you ever wonder why you don’t get the same close shave at home as you do when your at the barber? Well, yes… your right. You were not trained in the art of manscaping like your barber was but there are a few tricks you can do to step up your game.

The main one which we will be talking about today, is adding a pre-shave oil into your routine. This is the one tip that barbers don’t want to talk about. Hopefully, I don’t get my throat slit the next time I’m in the chair for putting barber shops out of business.

Simply by using a good pre-shave oil in addition to my shave cream, I have changed my life for the better. Before I learned the proper way to shave, I was like most guys and just kind of going through the motions of what I thought I was supposed to be doing. After lots of research, I found out exactly how terribly wrong I was going about things.

Since putting a pre-shave treatment into my daily routine I have noticed a complete look. I feel more confident in my professional life as well as my personal life. That’s why I thought I would share my experience with you.

Many Benefits of a High-Quality Pre-Shave Oil

I know what your thinking…it’s just another thing to buy. Trust me, pre-shave oils, even the highest quality brands are relatively inexpensive. Since you only need a few drops at a time, they last virtually forever. I only need to refresh mine every 5-6 months and I shave almost daily.

The benefits of a good pre-shave oil are well worth the extra two seconds it takes to apply. Before we touch on what to look for in pre-shave I will go over some of the benefits I noticed right away after adding the oil into my regiment.

A Super Clean Shave: Pre-shave treatments add an extra layer of protection between your face and the razor. This allows for the razor to better glide across your face instead of pulling and tearing at your skin.

By applying an extra lubricant such as a pre-shave oil you are softening and lifting your stubble    which in turn helps your razor do its job more effectively and giving you a more enjoyable shave.

Incredibly Easy to Use: The best part about pre-shave oils are just how easy they are to use. Simply put several drops on your fingers. Massage into your beard with small circular motions to lift hairs and allow the oils to soak in. Do this daily right before applying your regular shave cream.

Remember: Pay special attention to your neck and sideburns while applying your pre-shave oils. This is where most razor rash occurs so it is especially important to add a bit of extra lube to these areas.

Moisturizes & Nourishes Skin: This under-appreciated product is a saving grace when it comes to keeping your skin fresh and smooth feeling. A good pre-shave oil will have essential oils along with added vitamins and plant extracts designed to help moisturize your skin while shaving as well as nourishing your skin throughout the day.

After adding a pre-shave treatment into my daily routine I have noticed my skin has been less flaky and dry. I have since been able to stop using greasy, pore-clogging lotions on my face.

Prevents Razor Burn & Bumps: With an added layer of protection between your face and the blade of your razor you are instantly cutting down on razor rash. This means your face will be less red, puffy and raw after a shave.

Pre-shave oils also help prevent you from going to deep with your razor. When too much pressure is applied during a shave you are actually cutting the hairs below the surface of the skin. This is the number one cause of razor bumps. Pre-shave oils help you glide across the skin instead of digging in deep.

How to Pick a Great Pre-Shave Oil

Now that I have convinced you that pre-shave oils are for you, we can dive into a few things that separate the great pre-shave oils from the average store-bought oils.

Some oils leave you feeling like a greasy mess afterward instead of feeling refreshed. Avoid pre-shave treatments filled with chemicals or ingredients that don’t sound natural. I have compiled a list of several things that you should look for when shopping for a great pre-shave oil.

    • Essential Oils: There are tons of great essential oils out there. I tend to look for products that either has grape seed oil (packed with lots of good stuff) or organic olive oil. Both these oils are high quality and don’t leave my skin feeling slimy. A good oil means a more effective product and less irritated shave for you.
    • Vitamins: When choosing a pre-shave treatment look for products that have added vitamins such as Vitamin E. Pre-shave oils are great because they deliver much-needed nutrients directly to the follicles, so why not take advantage of that.
    • Plant Extract: Plant extracts such as wheat germ are great things to look for when researching a high-quality pre-shave oil. Wheat germ, for example, rejuvenates skin and has been known to even have age-defying properties. You want a product that will keep your skin moist throughout the day without being greasy.

Personally, I use Pre-Shave Treatment with Wheat Germ & Organic Cranberry Extract from Groom Culture because it covers all 3 bases. Use it with or without a shave cream to improve the health of your skin.

A lot of guys do not like to put things on their skin. Well, guess what, products are your friend and they are there to help. Use them, just don’t abuse them and you are sure to see results.

Invest in good products that work well. After just a few shaves you will notice a big difference in how your skin looks and feels. You won't be sorry you did.

Best of luck and until next time!
